Interested in learning to tie your own flies? Join The River's Edge and River's Edge West in 2024 for three-week Beginner Fly-Tying Classes. We’ll cover basic tools and techniques along with a handful of simple, reliable patterns to get you started on your own fly-tying journey.
Each River's Edge location will feature the same curriculum, so you'll only need to sign up for classes at one location.
No experience is required and all tools and materials will be provided. If you’ve always wanted to give fly tying a try but don’t know where to begin, this class is a great way to get started!
Dates
The River's Edge - 612 E. Main St.
River's Edge West - 59 North Star Ln.
Class Size: Limit of 4 students, ages 16 and up. Pre-registration required
Experience Level: Beginner (This class covers the absolute basics, so if you already have some tying experience, keep an eye out for some more advanced classes later this fall/winter)
Each class will build off the skills and techniques learned in the previous session, so attending all three classes is essential.

Aaron Freed, our store manager and lead fly tying instructor, is an Umpqua signature tier with years of experience. He will happily work with you to hone your techniques and hopefully teach you some new ones.

After working in the shop the past two summers, as well as instructing some of our Fly Fishing Classes, I’ve gotten to interact with tons of new anglers who are just getting started. One of the biggest takeaways I’ve found from these interactions, is that people are really intimidated by the knowledge surrounding fly fishing, specifically knots and different rigs.
Perhaps one of the most helpful, time-saving tools/gear I’ve ever come across is the tippet ring. Many of you have probably already heard of them, but with how much it has helped clients and customers, I feel the need to reintroduce.
